In the 16th century Lisbon became one of the most important capitals in Europe due to the spice trade.

The reconstruction of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755 converted the city into the most modern capital of Europe at the time.

Nowadays Lisbonv is a growing modern city but keeps its old traditional atmosphere.
